CheerLiving Magazine App
CheerLiving Magazine was a printed media before I was hired to build an app to digitally distribute the magazine. I custom designed the CheerLiving App using the Mag+ software development kit (SDK), an iOS app-building platform for distributing content. I designed the content in inDesign with the Mag+ Plug-in, and used the Mag+ iOS SDK to render custom MIB files. I created and embedded interactive content such as pop-ups, videos, gifs, slideshows, and shopping links to the company’s online store.
As a self-starter, I independently learned from Mag plus’ online technical documents and project examples to build the app. My key roles were to plan, design and execute all written content into interactive digital magazine issues. I planned, designed and packaged a total of six magazine issues for multiple devices over the time span of two years. As the only one trained with Mag+ software, I was in charge of app distribution and the administrative backend for all three major distribution platforms–Apple, Google and Amazon.
Developing the CheerLiving App required building graphical assets, such as the app icons and launch screen shown to the left, to create visual continuity throughout the magazine issues. When I designed the pages, I drew inspiration from well-known digital magazine subscriptions (i.e., The New Yorker, Forbes) current trends in the sports industry (i.e., Nike, Adidas). I overcame many technical challenges and learning curves when developing this app; I achieved the company’s goals and immensely grew from the experience.
Summer Issue
The summer issues were my favorite to design, because summertime graphic trends tend to be vibrant and lively. The iPad shown below has the cover for the Summer Issue of 2018; the three other pages are the title pages from various articles that continues in the app. The images in the middle were made for customer emails to promote the new summer issue of CheerLiving.
Winter Issue
For the 2018 winter issue, I planned the layout and directed the model at the photoshoot for the perfect angle. The VP wanted the winter cover to showcase the latest cheer uniform design from our in-house design team. With the release of the issue near the holidays in December, I chose the color scheme to be gold and green (the green was a in-house color the company offered to customers).
Fall Issue
For this fall cover, I was also involved in planning and directing the photoshoot at High School in San Diego. The design of each page was determined by the content, the audience and overall theme of the Issue. I had a lot of fun creating interactive pages for written content about back-to-school, Halloween, football season and super heroes.
